Avoid Vuvuzelas to Protect Your Hearing

Article by Jon Jacobson

London’s Tottenham Hotspur soccer team recently leaped ahead of American sports teams by taking the initiative to ban vuvuzelas from their stadium. Professional American sports teams have yet to follow the Hotspurs’ lead, but it’s more important than ever before to make sure these kinds of bans get put in place. Sure, plenty of Americans probably think that introducing such a ban would be a limit on their freedom and liberty, but vuvuzelas are not nearly as harmless as they may seem. These dangerous noisemakers pose a serious threat to people in so many ways, but especially towards people’s hearing abilities.Ever since vuvuzelas became widely popular at the 2010 World Cup, it’s become clear that fans are not going to stop using them any time soon unless they’re forced to give them up. Most soccer fans will be willing to give up the dangerous noisemakers if they’re given the choice between using vuvuzelas or watching their favorite teams. And in stadiums like London’s Tottenham Hotspurs, that’s exactly the choice fans are being forced to make. Fortunately, the powers that be have recognized the health risks that vuvuzelas pose to the general public. Scientific tests have shown that a single vuvuzela can produce sounds in excess of 120 decibels, which is obviously not a healthy level for human ears to be exposed to. It has been widely accepted for a long time that all sounds above 80 decibels cause hearing loss for humans who are in the vicinity. Vuvuzelas greatly exceed that safe level, and a whole stadium full of them is much louder than the 120 decibels that one alone can produce. Soccer fans and other sports fans shouldn’t have to have their hearing endangered just to go enjoy a game in person. Hopefully many American teams or the American government will follow the lead of their British friends across the ocean because it’s important to protect citizens from excessive dangers that can cause hearing loss. There are many other areas in which Americans are willing to give up some liberties in order to protect the health and safety of the greater population. For instance, you can’t get up and yell “fire” in a public place unless there actually is one, because doing so causes people to panic. When people get caught up in the moment like that, they may disregard the safety of those around them, which is why it’s so important to put protections in place. In the near future, Americans may start to take the danger of vuvuzelas as seriously as they should, in which case everyone’s hearing will be much better protected. Until that day comes, it’s important for everyone, not just sports fans, to make sure they visit their doctors regularly. There, they can take a hearing test and speak to an educated professional who can advise them about how best to take care of their health. While it’s incredibly important to take preventative measures to protect your ears, thankfully there are many hearing solutions available these days that have been developed to offer people help.
